Kickin' Gas one car at a time!

The MHS EV Team is an after school extracurricular activity made available to both Technology, Engineering and Design students and Automotive Service and Repair students.  The MHS EV program began in 2009 with a donated vehicle and an inspiration to successfully build a 100% electric vehicle.  We started with a 1997 Saturn SL2 The vehicle did not run at that time from sitting for several years as the result of a collision.  During this first year the students not only converted the Saturn over to a 96 volt DC system, they also had to repair the existing damage.  Various parts were taken from two different donor vehicles were used to make one good vehicle.  We nick named the car the Green Meanie as a result.  The Saturn was three different colors at that time.

During the second year the 96 volt DC system was upgraded to 144 volts DC.  In addition to the voltage upgrade various components were upgraded at this time as well.  The vehicle was shot with one color primer for this year.

Over the course of the following year, the Saturn was once again reconfigured to 156 volts DC.  The students were also able to finally paint the Saturn EV with our school colors.  The Saturn enjoyed it's best performance to date with a 42 mile range performance after two 1/8 mile acceleration runs were the Saturn achieved low 15's.

For the current year our Saturn is seeing more upgrades in the form of upgraded suspension, wheels and tires, brakes, power steering and a battery management system.    We are eager to see how we fare at the EV Challenge this year.

In addition to the Saturn EV we are in the initial stages of converting a 2001 Chevrolet S-10.
